Multiple Chances For Thunderstorms, Severe Weather In West Michigan This Weekend.

Summary:

Multiple chances for showers and thunderstorms exist this weekend with the primary threat being on Saturday, which may include chances for severe weather for portions of the West Michigan Weather coverage area with the risk for damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes all on the table.

Today (Friday) 04/26/2024:

A round of showers and storms will move northeast through the region later this evening. No severe weather concerns with this line but frequent lightning will be a hazard that exists as these showers and storms moves through. Remember: if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. When thunder roars, go indoors!

Saturday 04/27/2024:

The primary focus for this forecast remains on the thunderstorm and severe weather potential for Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of northern lower Michigan under a Slight Risk (Level 2/5) for severe weather on Saturday with an "All-Hazards" threat being highlighted. Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threat but a couple of tornadoes can't be ruled out.

Primary timing for severe weather looks to be after 6:00 PM but thunderstorms, especially along and south of the I-94 corridor remain possible earlier in the afternoon and some low-end attendant severe weather threat could materialize there. For this reason, we will leave the timing on our graphics as 2:00 PM to Midnight, and perhaps into very early Sunday morning.

While the greatest threat for severe storms currently appears to be to the north of our coverage area, across far northern lower Michigan, we will continue to monitor the forecast for changes and southerly shifts to the greatest severe weather potential. Regardless, our coverage area sits squarely in the Slight and Marginal Risk areas and all of western and southwestern lower Michigan needs to be aware of the potential for severe weather on Saturday and stay tuned for additional forecast updates.

Sunday 04/28/2024:

After midnight on Saturday, the risk for showers and thunderstorms, with an attendant low-end severe weather threat may continue into the early morning hours on Sunday.

Isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue through the day on Sunday. Previously, severe weather appeared possible on Sunday as well, however, this is looking less likely and the SPC would seem to agree with that as the current Day 3 outlook places lower Michigan only under a General Thunderstorm delineation.
