There is a low chance for some isolated school closings on Thursday.
A clipper system is expected to move through lower Michigan beginning early Thursday morning. This system will bring snow, rain, and possibly some mixed precipitation to the region.
What we believe will negativley impact school closure chances is not so much the lack of accumulating snow or it's potential travel impacts, but rather, the timing of the system.
Conditions overnight on Wednesday will remain mostly dry across the area up until about 4:00 or perhaps 5:00am. By this time, many area schools already have buses on the roads and the snow and any potential mixed precipitation will likely arrive just a copule of hours too late to force additional closings.
That said, the system is still about 48 hours away and there is plenty of time for the forecasted timing, snowfall totals, and the rain/snow boundary lines to shift and change. Currently, computer weather models suggest that there is an area near the lakeshore in Southwestern and West-central Muskegon County and into parts of North-central Ottawa County that may see 1, to perhaps 4, inches of snow by 8:00am.
For the aforementioned reasons we have opted to introduce low end probabiliites for those areas, extending eastward to the Kent/Ottawa County line, as that area appears to have the best shot at seeing isolated school closings due to the snow/forecasted snowfall totals.
As the clipper system gets closer and computer weather models continue to evaluate the overall positioning and thermal enviroments that will be in place across the region overnight Wednesday and into Thursday we'll start to have a better idea of what to expect with this system.
