A tranquil weather pattern will continue for the remainder of the beginning of the week, including Valentine's Day before snow returns.
Old man winter has been asleep the last week or so, even allowing many locations in Michigan to smash record maximum and minimum temperatures last week and sending unseasonably strong thunderstorms through some parts of Western Michigan.
He returns later this week on Thursday with the first chances for measurable snowfall in several weeks looking increasingly likely, especially north of I-96 where 2-5 inches of snow appear possible on Thursday. Rain will be favored, as opposed to snow, the farther South you are, especially south of I-196.
Yes, chances for school closings exist, though it's too early to predict where these might occur at this time. We'll need to continue to watch the timing and forecasted snowfall totals on the computer weather models throughout the remainder of the beginning of the week to determine to what degree, if any, school closures may occur. Generalized travel impacts are also probable, but to what extent remains to be seen.
Stay tuned for updates on school closings and the general risk for travel impacts.
Scattered lake effect snow showers and flurries will continue for the entire region to start the weekend before ending the period with more seasonable temperatures and partly to mostly sunny skies for most of the region.
Enjoy your Valentine's Day if you celebrate and Fat Tuesday too!
