School Closing Outlook for Wednesday 03/18/2026

Special Note For Our Community:

Due to the increasing costs of website hosting and mass email alerts, we are forced to make a difficult decision this month. We can no longer offer paid subscriptions here on our website, as it will begin to cost West Michigan Weather nearly $800/year.

Beginning April 1st, 2026, we will no longer offer early access to our public forecasts or exclusive access to our supporter-only forecasts here on our website, nor will you receive emails from this site anymore. Instead, both of these will now be published by/released on our Patreon page.

For those who do not wish to pay a subscription, we do offer a FREE membership, which provides email alerts and push notifications when we issue public forecasts.

For those who do wish to subscribe for a monthly fee and get added perks like early access, exclusive access, discount codes, priority chat rooms, and more: the prices to support us are the same as they are here on our website; it's just a new platform that offers a blog format like this, an app with push notifications if you desire, and more. We are offering 50% off your first month to all those who switch to this platform before April 1st, 2026! Use code "WMIWX5433" to redeem this offer when you sign up.

Day 1 School Closing Outlook

Forecast Valid: Wednesday, March 18, 2026

Forecast Issued: Tuesday, March 17, 2026, 4:30 PM

Forecasters: Jacob Melton

Summary:

A couple of isolated school closures or delays are possible Wednesday morning, mainly for areas north of US-10, due to lingering impacts from the recent winter storm and light snow overnight into Wednesday morning.

Discussion:

We are still seeing impacts across some of our area from the recent winter storm, particularly north of US-10 in Lake, Osceola, and Clare counties, where secondary roadways remain very slick and power outages are still an issue. Harrison Community Schools has already issued a statement announcing a two-hour delay for tomorrow morning to allow for daylight before sending buses out. The statement also mentions the possibility of a full closure depending on overnight trends.

Light snow is also likely overnight tonight into tomorrow morning, which may factor into the morning commute for these areas as well. Snow accumulations for most areas will remain under an inch. Areas north of Whitehall near the lakeshore may be bumped into the 1 to 3 inch range due to southwest low-level flow-induced lake enhancement.

We have opted to go with a Minuscule risk near/north of US-10 to cover this potential. Some consideration was given to a Limited risk north of US-10 in Lake, Osceola, and Clare counties. However, uncertainty when it comes to secondary road conditions and power restoration timing prevented the inclusion of that risk zone.
