Special Note For Our Community:
Due to the increasing costs of website hosting and mass email alerts, we are forced to make a difficult decision this month. We can no longer offer paid subscriptions here on our website, as it will begin to cost West Michigan Weather nearly $800/year.
Beginning April 1st, 2026, we will no longer offer early access to our public forecasts or exclusive access to our supporter-only forecasts here on our website, nor will you receive emails from this site anymore. Instead, both of these will now be published by/released on our Patreon page.
For those who do not wish to pay a subscription, we do offer a FREE membership, which provides email alerts and push notifications when we issue public forecasts.
For those who do wish to subscribe for a monthly fee and get added perks like early access, exclusive access, discount codes, priority chat rooms, and more: the prices to support us are the same as they are here on our website; it's just a new platform that offers a blog format like this, an app with push notifications if you desire, and more. We are offering 50% off your first month to all those who switch to this platform before April 1st, 2026! Use code "WMIWX5433" to redeem this offer when you sign up.
Day 1 School Closing Outlook
Forecast Valid: Thursday, March 19, 2026
Forecast Issued: Wednesday, March 18, 2026, 4:30 PM
Forecasters: Jacob Melton

Summary:
Isolated school closures or delays are possible across parts of the area on Thursday morning due to the potential for freezing rain impacting the morning commute.
Discussion:
Another round of mixed wintry precipitation, including the potential for freezing rain, is set to impact the area overnight tonight and into Thursday morning. While this does not look like an ice storm-type event, it doesn’t take much ice at all to cause issues on roadways, and the timing will likely lead to impacts during the Thursday morning school commute.
We have gone with “Limited” probabilities across much of the area near and south of the Interstate 96 corridor, except for far southwest Lower Michigan, where isolated school closures or delays are possible. Closures or delays will be most likely in more rural areas with a greater number of secondary roadways that may not be treated in time for the morning commute. While some guidance supports “Medium” probabilities, this will be a fairly compact band of precipitation, and uncertainty remains regarding the exact track and timing. An upgrade to “Medium” is possible if confidence increases in where the heaviest precipitation sets up.
Elsewhere, we have gone with “Minuscule” probabilities, meaning that while closures or delays are not expected, isolated instances cannot be fully ruled out. Near the US-10 corridor, lingering impacts from this past weekend’s winter storm, particularly secondary roadways and power outages, may still be present. Across far southwest Lower Michigan, wintry precipitation is less likely Thursday morning. However, we want to allow for potential shifts in where wintry precipitation develops overnight into early Thursday.
